How do you feel about MMORPGs?
      #83708 - 04/22/04 02:56 PM

How do you feel about MMORPGs?
You may choose only one
They should pander to specific tastes.
They should try to please all audiences.
Companies should stop wasting their time and money on them.

It would be neat if you had more options. Considering you don't, and none of those options fits my opinion, I will happily decline from voting. Hooray.

I don't think they should chase after a specific audience OR try to please everyone. They should make the game they wanted to make. Period.

I think there are a lot of amazing developers out there with amazing projects that are being destroyed because they're compromising their original designs in order to please a specific community. (Neocron? Anarchy Online?) You also see others that are releasing great games and then completely destroying them by trying to make them more marketable, or please everyone (FFXI, EQ, DAoC).

If devs stuck to their original gameplan, I think the MMoRPGs that are out would be more enjoyable and unique. The only MMoRPG I actually see doing that at this point is City of Heroes, which is one of the biggest reasons I'm interested in playing it.

Good point Tyr it is a very selective poll and your choice should be added. But I think the time has passed for just launching a game on its own merits. More and more will be specifically tailored to a sample audience it is a major part of the beta testing process.

I tried making more options, but that was as many as I could think of. :x

If you could give me more significantly more options, I'll redo this poll.

City of Heroes looks interesting, but I don't see the re-play factor in it. Plus I can't be a super-villain.

City of Villians is the first expansion pack for the game, and apparently all of the quests are randomly generated - slightly like a not-so-shitty version of Anachy Online's dungeons. With City of Villians, they're also putting in PvP (Heroes vs Villians, obviously) on a duel system, and I think there will be "arena" fighting.

I'm not so sure about the randomness of the quests. You have a contact, they give you quests because you have the same contact. If you are the same Origin (Race is best comparison) your characters seem to do identical quests. It was still pretty fun after a couple of days, though, because grouping is pretty encouraged.

Yer right on the other stuff, though. I think Arena battles are coming well before CoV expansion.

Also, I'm going to agree with Tyr's view on games. These people are trained and educated to make games. They already know what the middle-ground is so that they give everyone a peice of what they want, and they shouldn't have to listen to a few customers.

Yea, it's cool if they listen to customer demands somewhat, but the end result should be their product, and they should say "Fuck You" to the nerf cryers. By catering to those people, you nerf something else, and then someone else feels like they're getting the small end of the stick, and then it's just an endless tug of war with you ruining the fun of everyone by trying to make the game better for a few vocal people. Just plain annoying.

The only reason a Developer should nerf something is if something is blatantly obvious as being superior or inferior. If you have 4 classes: Theif, White Mage, Black Mage, & Fighter, and NOBODY is a Theif, then you should probably increase some power in them. If everyone is a Black Mage, though, you should look carefully at them and decide whether or not you should nerf them. It could be that Black Mages are just more fun to play, but aren't superior to the other classes. Don't make them LESS fun, then, make the other ones more fun.

I think that's something of a staple argument used by veteran online gamers - and one of the largest and most important arguments that is constantly ignored by developers.

in Lineage right now, there's a HUGE blow out over an evasion nerf, making Light Armor and Evade classes significantly weaker. A big argument about this is that instead of cutting the evasion rating in half, they should have increased the power of medium and heavy armor by 25 or 50% - evening out the differences between the evade classes and the tank classes.

I'm pretty much against any balancing that makes anything more powerful to even it out; but I guess it creates less controversy and people like bigger numbers... <shrug>

I'm more against heavy nerfing than I am against strengthening for balance. It causes less controversy if you hand players that feel weak a bone, instead of taking away from players that feel strong.

Yeah, but eventually everyone will be way more powerful than they're supposed to be and they have to rework the NPC system.

I dunno, maybe it's just the fact that I take pleasure in seeing people with overpowered classes getting taken down a peg or two.

Yeah.. but when it comes to the evasion nerf? Or the Dwarf nerf? ...come on, now.

While I agree that evasion classes had it too easy (nonstop chaining blues w/o ever resting...) I think cutting their evasion percentage tot he point that they get more out of wearing heavy armor than light armor is going too far.

Also.. why nerf stun, and why make spoil such a huge taunt? Dwarves are already a poor melee class in relation to the others, nerfing them is completely unnecessary.

The stun thing is probably a PvP consideration.

I think it'll be even worse in PvP. Now any character with a stun type attack can stun tanks for 2-3x longer than before and move off to kill the casters/healers w/o hitting the tanks more and breaking the stun

Yea, that's kind of a toss up, because eventually you have to buff monsters to keep everyone from being uber. Still, I think that process acts slower and keeps people happier longer than reducing the effectiveness of everyone by negative nerfs.

Righto. One class is blantantly overpowered, give the others a small boost so they quit bitching. Everyone's happy.
